The Clarke County Historical Society is a private non-profit organization,
founded in Grove Hill, Clarke County, Alabama in 1972.

Agricultural College

235 College Avenue

The First District Agricultural College operated from 1896 to 1936. It is currently Jackson Middle School. The President's home still stands at the northeast corner of College and Clinton. Jackson's school mascot, the Aggie, reminds us of the town's early farming history.

Centeral Salt Works

5.3 miles south of Jakson off of County Road 15

The natural salt springs supplied much of the state's salt during the Civil War, a staple made unobtainable by the Union naval blockade.

First called Pine Level, changed to Jackson, after Andrew Jackson, was one of the earliest settlements in the county.

Built in 1819 French's Chapel is the first church in Clarke County.
 

Gainestown

At the junction of County Road 29 and County Road 33

A restored 1919 two-room school house across from the antebellum Wilson-Finlay House. Both are private residences.

Kimbell House

Mayton Drive

Built in 1848, this home was occupied by Isham Kimbell. As a youngster, Isham survived the 1813 Creek War Kimbell-James massacre.

Upper Salt Works

6 miles north of Jackson off of Hwy. 69.

 

WWII POW Camp

101 College Ave.

The POW Camp was in operation during the last year of World War II, housing German prisoners of War.
