New Clarke County history book for sale!

D.C. Mathews’s, “Early Sketches of Southwest Alabama” is now available for the first time ever in book form. The late D.C. Mathew, former Clarke County Superintendent of Education, wrote a historical column from 1962 to 1966 in the South Alabamaian detailing Clarke County’s history.

This 373 page book begins with Clarke County’s early settlement, goes through the Creek War, and through the Civil War on up to the early 1900s. Also included are interviews conducted with Mr. Mathews about other aspects of local lore and newspaper articles written about the historian. The book includes an index to help researchers.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Clarke County Museum is to educate our community and visitors about our rich local and regional history so they might appreciate and preserve our heritage. We seek to carry out our goal primarily through the collection, exhibition, demonstration and interpretation of artifacts. In addition, we want to bring people and history together through public programming which provides individual, first-hand experiences that will enrich people’s lives.

Clarke County Historical Museum

Included on the National Register of Historic Places, the Clarke County Historical Museum is a treasure trove of local history. Housed in an 1854 Plantation Plain-style home, the museum has permanent displays about the county’s rich history.

One of the most popular exhibits is the fossils of the Zeuglodon, a prehistoric whale than swam in the ocean that covered Clarke County some 50 million years ago. The museum also features exhibits about Native Americans, the Civil War and World Wars, the county’s rural life, and an antebellum kitchen. Traveling exhibits are also featured. Visitors may also tour the other historic buildings on the museum grounds. Click on the links below to learn more about these other buildings.

The Clarke County Historical Museum is located in the heart of downtown Grove Hill, just off the Highway 43 by-pass. The museum is open Mondays from 12 noon to 4 p.m.; Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.
